Basil
Ocimum basilicum
A tender kitchen herb with fragrant leaves, from broad-leaved sweet basil to purple and Thai cultivars.
Where it’s found
Sweet basil has tropical origins in Africa and Asia and is now grown in gardens and containers around the world. Leaf shape, color, and fragrance can vary from one cultivar to another.
What to look for. Look for paired leaves, square stems, and upright spikes of small flowers. Common sweet basil often has broad, tender, green leaves.
Common spellwork uses
Basil is often associated with prosperity, hospitality, and protection in modern spellwork. A familiar plant by the kitchen door can stand for the kind of home or welcome you want to create.
These are symbolic associations in modern practice.
Self-help and journaling
Think about what makes an ordinary day feel abundant. It might be time to cook, a neighbor who checks in, or something you can share.
Journal prompt. What do I already have enough of to share this week?
Growing and storing it
Growing. Give basil a sunny, warm spot and wait until frost danger has passed to move it outdoors. Pinch growing tips for a bushier plant and keep the soil evenly moist without waterlogging it.
Storing. Dry tender leaves promptly with good airflow or a dehydrator. Store fully dried leaves in a labeled airtight jar out of direct light.
