Chamomile
Matricaria chamomilla
German chamomile, an annual with fine leaves and fragrant white flowers with yellow centers.
Where it’s found
German chamomile occurs across parts of North Africa, Europe, and Asia and is widely grown in herb gardens. It is a different species from perennial Roman chamomile.
What to look for. Fine, feathery leaves and small flower heads are good clues. The yellow center of German chamomile becomes raised and is hollow when cut lengthwise.
Common spellwork uses
In modern spellwork, chamomile is associated with peace, rest, and good fortune. It can symbolize the point in an evening when you decide the day has asked enough of you.
These are symbolic associations in modern practice.
Self-help and journaling
Write down one thing you can leave until morning. Think about what you want the last part of your evening to feel like.
Journal prompt. What would make the end of today feel complete?
Growing and storing it
Growing. Give German chamomile sun and soil that drains. It grows from seed and can reseed itself if you leave some flower heads in the garden.
Storing. Gather dry flower heads and spread them out with good airflow. Store only when fully dry, in an airtight container away from light.
