Where it’s found

Sweet bay is native to the Mediterranean Basin. It grows as a shrub or small tree and can be kept in a container where winters are too cold to leave it outdoors.

What to look for. Its leaves are firm, smooth-edged, and pointed, with a distinct aroma when crushed. Confirm the botanical name on the label. Cherry laurel is a different plant and is toxic.

Common spellwork uses

Bay leaves appear in protection work and intentions about reaching a goal. Their association with laurel wreaths also makes them a fitting symbol for finishing something you worked hard to achieve.

These are symbolic associations in modern practice.

Self-help and journaling

Choose one goal you can describe in plain language. Write down what you can do next and what you’ll count as progress along the way.

Journal prompt. What would a meaningful small victory look like this week?

Growing and storing it

Growing. Grow a labeled sweet bay in a pot with drainage and good light. In cold climates, bring container plants indoors before hard freezes and reduce watering while growth slows.

Storing. Dry leaves fully before storing them whole. Label the jar with the botanical name and keep it in a cool, dark cupboard.
